Ernst Kraft

Born in Bloemendaal, the Netherlands, in 1952, Ernst Kraft is a visual artist. Since 1989 he has lived and worked in Spain.

In the 1970s he studied fine arts in a practical context with the artist Jacques von Pell in Amsterdam, and soon after opened his own studio in the same city. In 1989 he moved his studio to the province of Málaga, where he worked for two decades in Mijas before settling in the capital. Since 2023 he has been based in the province of Alicante.

His painting and drawing are characterized by an abstract gestural language related to neo-expressionism and informalism. On the occasion of the exhibition Poemas de guerra (2019), a book of the same name was published, bringing together the works from the show alongside a poem by Salvador López Becerra written in response. In 2023 he exhibited Paisaje quebrado at the Museo Centro de Artes de Vanguardia La Neomudéjar in Madrid, accompanied by a photographic publication documenting the exhibition. From December 2023 to February 2024 he presented La mirada de las mil yardas at the Ateneo de Málaga, its title taken from the expression Thousand-yard stare coined by Tom Lea. In 2024, as part of the James Ensor Year, he created the diptych Self-portrait among strangers and masks, which in 2025 entered the art collection of the city of Ostend, Belgium.

In addition to his pictorial work, he has developed installations and sculptural projects in public spaces. Among them are El Laberinto de León (Fundación Alzheimer, León, Mexico), El laberinto de piedra (Ortspitze Park, Passau, Germany), La casa de las dos chimeneas (sculpture park of Santa Rosa, Argentina), El laberinto del Patio (Ateneo de Málaga), and Monumento al migrante desconocido (International Art Triennial 2021, Centro Cultural Tijuana, Mexico).
